Restaurant Highlight – Chorrito Cantina, Leith

Last month, my boyfriend and I decided to go on a walk down Leith Walk in the sunshine. I live (or used to live) on Montgomery Street in Edinburgh, which gave me direct access to some of the best restaurants, cafes, and bars that the city has to offer.

We came across Chorrito Cantina quite by accident, having walked all the way down to KREMA Bakehouse for coffee before turning around and walking back towards the city centre, but this time on the right-hand side. We moseyed around the shops. After a particularly interesting shop, Rhinestone Cowboys, we happened to glance in the window of a tiny restaurant advertising a Sunday Brunch deal, Chilaquiles for £10.95. Now this only happens on the last Sunday of each month, according to the info I can find on their Facebook, but it is well worth the wait. In fact, this blog post comes at an ideal time because the last Sunday of the month happens to be this Sunday!

It’s no wonder this place is popular, as it was recently named the ‘Best Brunch in Edinburgh’ by TimeOut, a high honour indeed. In my opinion, formed solely on the single visit where I ate one thing from the menu, this is well-deserved. It’s a small place, so we sat at the counter overlooking the kitchen, which was really nice; it felt more like we were part of the rhythm of the restaurant, which might sound weird, but I thought it was a more personal experience.

Now, enough of that, onto the food…

So this is the Chilaquiles. Tortillas covered in (for me) verde enchilada sauce, refried beans, guacamole and queso finished with a runny fried egg, pickled onions and coriander. It was to die for, so fresh whilst balancing the richness of the cheese and refried beans. The tortillas maintained their crunchy texture despite the heft of the array of toppings and the homemade hot sauces really took it to the next level. It was spicy and creamy and just right for a Sunday brunch.

I would thoroughly recommend this place for anyone visiting Edinburgh. For food, I always rave about Leith and Leith Walk specifically has so many amazing independent restaurants that it is well worth a visit, despite the extra walk!
